...you will not be missed by me. While a focal point for the room, this fireplace was a huge space killer in the kitchen, not to mention a constant hazard for our growing child. We had been told fixing it for actual use would be a budget breaker, but we still tried very hard to find a way to integrate it into the space. I'll admit that Joe was the advocate here to keep it, while I lobbyed pretty hard to nix it. Ultimately, Joe did agree it was best to get rid of it, and actually participated in its demise (it was all caught on film for the show!).Here's a before shot of the fireplace, followed by an after (the kitchen seems so much bigger without it!) The final shot is of the new hole in our ceiling (which I'm pretty sure Tom has a plan for!)

Oh my heart is breaking into a thousand pieces along with your fireplace. I would love to have that in my kitchen even with a small child. Such a piece of history! We found the chimney for the kitchen stove/fireplace in our turn of the century home. I plan on exposing the brickwork at least for a neat focal point in our dining room. I guess I'm a preservationist when it comes to old homes!
Just wanted to say thanks for keeping up with the posts. It seems all the prior project homeowners let this slide. It's great to see regular updates.
I think you did the right thing in removing the fireplace it really does add to the space. Maybe though you can find a plce for the old stove somewhere as they do help keep a house warmer. Although I suspect that you may be thinking along the lines of forced air conditioning and heat as I thought I saw something on the webcam that indicates that. Still though for atmosphere at least the old stove might look good somewhere else. A thought anyway. I too want to say thanks for the posts too because as you know the webcams are sometimes out and even when they are not they don't tell the whole story. I know I am really looking forward to seeing your families house. I think you and your husband have such great ideas. Have a nice week/weekend.
Close that truck door and let's let the guy in the family room go home tonite. The web cams need help.
Becky, maybe you an Joe can use the bricks from the fireplace for a patio?
We're looking forward to watching the work on TV. Congrats on everything. Tell Joe I said hello.
Good move. Your house looks much better without it.
