Newsflash: Light returns to the landing

September 11, 2009

Any faithful webcam watchers will remember the day the landing went dark. Up until that point, our southwest-facing landing window drew in plenty of bright sunlight—both direct and ambient. But when the new library was framed in where the old flat roof had been, none of that light made it into the original part of the house. A dark time, indeed. We needed electric lights, even on the sunniest mornings.

Tom and Kevin install the large library window; at this point, it was still hard to judge how the light would filter into the rest of the house

Paul and Tom urged us to be patient. After all, until the wall and landing bookshelves were removed to break into to the new library space, it would be impossible to judge how much light would make it into the stairs and hallway. Well, a few days ago our patience was rewarded. The new area feels as big, bright, and spacious as we could have hoped. I'm sure Roger's pruning of the hemlock trees helped, too. Let there be light!
