TOH in da house!
Three days after we signed our purchase and sale, we got the following email from a friend:
“This Old House is eagerly looking for a homeowner, in Boston or the surrounding suburbs, who is about to embark on a major renovation of a house ready to begin work in the next few months. The house should be a pre-1950's structure with an eager homeowner.”
We responded with a link to our home, and 24 hours later I outlined our bigger vision to Tom Silva and the production team, Jeff Ruhe, Deborah Hood, and David Vos. They liked what they saw but wanted to meet Maddy and Treff.
So two days later, everyone was back, along with Richard Trethewey, to meet us and to listen to our vision.
Treff outlined some of the key elements of our design that would transform the home, and also walked through the historical commission approval process. The following week we saw what a great job TOH did with George Mabry’s home in Cambridge, where we also met Roger Cook.
We realized this was a great opportunity to do a more significant renovation, get great quality work done on time, and leverage the team’s expertise for great ideas and the latest technology.
All we had to do was buy and sell houses two months earlier than expected, arrange our finances to do a much more significant project, find a place to live, complete the plans and move!
It was not easy, but as fate would have it, we found a buyer who wanted our home earlier, an apartment down the street from school, and all the other pieces fell in place. Right place, right time, and we were off to the races!

I am the proud owner of the former Montana State Orphan's Home in Twin Bridges. There are 20+ historic structures on site. The 21,000sf Victorian resides on the Montana State Historic register. Most are brick structures with great possibilities. In the two years since I have owned it I have replaced 15 roofs, removed obsolete power lines and replaced with underground service, as well as identified the bulk of the environmental hazards with some removal planned this year. I will be moving into a 1920's home in the next few months and intend to renovate one building at a time as I market for a single use for this facility with 145,000sf in a town with a population of 420. I keep www.mcctb.com as current as I can with the project status. Wish me luck, check out my project and if you are ever in Twin Bridges please stop in.
